Kazuo Ishiguro’s An artist of the Floating World is a novel ripe with scenes of introspection, indeed the past is one of the principal devices in order to further many of the work’s central themes. Regardless of the oftentimes stringent, even revered, remembrance of times of youthful flights of fancy there is nonetheless a looming presence of the present, and perhaps crucially one of the future. Truly a contrast is established between Ono’s floating world and that of the next generation. Although Ono sees the errors of his country and his own actions and expresses them in his frequent recollections he cannot help but hope that life will be better for his and his country’s progenies. We can see that through the contrast of the past and the present established by the use of flashbacks Ishiguro establishes the significance of the floating world and the reasons why, although it may not be inherently negative, it must be pushed aside for the future. One of the more plentiful motifs interspaced throughout the novel is that of the biased flashback, characterized profusely by the unreliable narrator that is Ono. This emphasizes the duality that exists in the novel which serves its purpose stylistically as well as analytically. The novel is able to establish itself as one with a reverence for Japan’s past and its customs but makes way for the ideals of the ‘new world’ which serves to contrast the floating world of the past. The descriptions of this world of leisure stop short of being specified as an old-world custom yet it nonetheless parallels one of the novels central motifs; that of the teacher-student relationship. Apart from being a plot device the use of the different firms in which Ono Studies his craft under different masters emphasizes the effects on the past on those which will continue the craft, specifically those effects the teacher has on the learner and how this individual will use these teachings and transfuse the new ideals in the execution of this selfsame craft. Ono frequently sees this relation in his older years through his grandson Ichiro, this generational gap serves as perhaps the most intimate representation of this ‘new way of doing things’ however it is Ono’s hope that his teachings serve to instill in his grandson the remnants of the past that surely still have some worth, â€Å"certain traits will tend to survive, like some shadow of that influence†¦ it is my hope that my grandson will retain them into his adulthood† (Ishiguro, 136). Whether the floating world represents an ideal of the past is not clear as Ono at times expresses his hope that the floating world may be reborn in the coming years. The effects of the war had a very real effect on the citizens of Japan, physiologically being one of them, the ‘smell’ of the smoke hangs in the air for Ono and he cannot escape its implications. The olfactory effects this has is nearly the same extent to that of the ever-growing smell of the local slums, representing his complacency, this stench grew stronger over time until â€Å"it became quite nauseous† (Ishiguro, 166). But perhaps the strongest use of olfactic imagery is that which pertains to Ono’s craft, as previously stated his realization that his paintings have the ability for real impact, emphasized by the guilt-ridden moments of reflections in the later parts of the novel, the line, â€Å"bad paintings make bad smoke† (Ishiguro, 184) is crucial to the theme of pushing aside the complacent leisure of the floating world that Ono’s generation frequented. This spreading of a custom which has about it a great focus on passivity is perha ps not readily compliant with the new order of things after the previous generations shake-up of the status quo. Another device which is used as an emphasis in order to further the idea of picking and choosing the elements of the past in order to avoid the selfsame eras errs is that of the unreliable narrator in the flashback scenes which make up a significant bulk of the novel. So too does Mrs. Kawakami have a hand in relating to the reader the futility of maintaining a floating world in the aftermath of the war. As Ono recalls it the times spent in the pleasure district was a form of indulgence with which an aura of leisure not in line with the then cur rent time of war. This was spearheaded by Mrs. Kawakami’s place which is most significant in the state it is in at the novel’s present. What was originally a thriving hub is now reduced to a near empty abode with nary a traveler in sight, Ono then is one of the few who still has sympathy, and perhaps even one foot in this rapidly deteriorating floating world. Up until now, the reader may deduce that the floating word is inherently negative, in truth there are many negatives to it and apart from the previous examples perhaps the greatest declaration of this by Ishiguro is the scene of Ono’s youth. This flashback serves to show the reader the relationship between the protagonist and his strict father, yet the most important aspect of this scene is that of the relating the prophecy that the traveling monk gave to the family concerning Ono. Our protagonist was destined to be a part of this floating world yet ultimately it was his decision to join the artists as it was his decision to escape the complacence inducing profession. Here we see the contrast between fate and free will, whatever he was destined to do it was the path that Ono decided to take which defines his character. This is why Mr. Enchi’s rushed accusation toward Ono is flawed, â€Å"most things are more complicated than they appear, Mr. Enchi. Your generation tend s to see things far too simply† (Ishiguro, 113). The new generation tends to view those in the past as the culprits for their present ailments although the reality, the greater scope is much less black and white. The complacency of the floating world it seems is not compatible with the time of action landscape of post-war era Japan, the scenes of introspection draw a significant parallel when the placed against the backdrop of the modern ways, those in the olden days are both physically and metaphorically crumbling as they make way for the next generation. In order to response to such incident and other terrorist attacks preparedness is important (Baldwin, 2005). Today, DHS is working on it’s readiness to response on those various emergencies. On top of its agenda is to better prepare and coordinate the Nation’s capabilities to improve speed and efficiency of delivering services to our people. Another major assistance the organization provides to the people is information dissemination. With the creation of DHS, warning systems have become more effective and public warning has been enhanced (Baldwin, 2005). With the improved warning systems, cyber and terrorist threats are easily identified, as a result people are warned in advanced. With threats known, countermeasure and contingency plans can then be generated. With a single agency dedicated in providing security to the American people, works are carried out more efficiently and at faster rate, as information is made centralized and securing of documents, which eat ample amount of time, in order to coordinate with other agency which has jurisdiction in certain case is not necessary. Time is conserved and as a result DHS functions more effectively. The agency then is able to generate necessary countermeasures. Also, by merging the different agencies and forming one immense organization strength and skills are then concentrated and focused much better. Resources are also conserved and man power is utilized more efficiently. Furthermore, confusion into which jurisdiction the different cases will fall not arise, since operations are all sanctioned by the department. Leakage of information can also be controlled, since there is no need for the DHS to inform other agency, thus a more controlled surrounding which is manageable is attained. However, creating a single agency which handles affairs that provides protection to the homeland poses several critical issues. The scope of DHS mission is broad which encompasses terrorist affairs, natural calamities and entry of illegal drugs. With the merging of different agencies to form the DHS, special agencies and units which are created for specific functions are also merged with the homeland department. Although by merging, it has become a part of a new organization, it has also become a regular unit which receives general orders unlike before when they are called for special situations and specialize in performing specific functions. Also, the budget the department needs balloons every year as several agendas are needed to be tended. Since, DHS is the organization which functions and executes actions with all matters related and concerning about security and protection of our people and homeland, the organization requires large financial assistance and grants. For instance, the creation of DHS as a sole organization that would provide security and protection to the people and homeland are actions that are generated by the attacks. In an effort to strengthen intelligence reports and ability to combat and fight terrorists affairs, various agencies have joined hands and merged to prevent incidents that lead to the September 11 attacks. The end result is an agency that promises to protect the people by controlling the borders, provide protection and support to aviation and port security, increase preparedness in emergency response and counter act the affairs of different elements that threatens the peace and security of the people. From the organization’s mission we can infer that they are logically tied together as they all sought for stoppage of criminal and terrorists acts that are detrimental to the nation and the people. They are measures and strategic actions that are carried out in order to safe guard the people and allow them to live their everyday lives free from fear uncertainties. As various elements continue to threaten the nation and its people, DHS will continue to be at the forefront of the war against them. With the advent of new technology and new devices and equipments being invented, preventions and countermeasures to terrorist and criminal attacks are not impossible to achieve. Code Hero1 Essay Robert Jordan has been defined as a Hemingway code hero. In Hemingways books, a code hero is usually male, as Hemingways books seem to have a similarity to Hemingway himself. These code heroes may have been previously wounded or gone through some sort of an ordeal, and so they could have a drinking problem, or a problem sleeping. They seem to be disillusioned, and/or self-oriented, and are not usually loyal to a large cause, but rather a small group of people or a relatively small idea or thing. In For Whom the Bell Tolls, Robert Jordan, the code hero, most likely dies at the end. If it were not for his loyalty to a small group, the events in the novel would probably not have transpired as they did. Jordan is an American explosives expert. Being so much of an expert that he would be sent on such a mission indicates that he must have some experience in military demolitions, and he may have previously gone through a similar mission. A traumatic experience from a previous mission may very well be affecting his actions in the novel, such as how he has found himself in various situations of indecision. One such example could be the confrontation with Pablo at the beginning, and the continuing problems Pablo causes. Indecision could provide a reason for having a sleeping problem, as he does some things other than sleeping at night, one of the criteria for a code hero. Disillusionment can be seen as the main contributor to the code hero definition. Jordans disillusionment grows throughout the novel, to the point where he doesnt believe in the rebel cause whatsoever, war itself, or the killing of other human beings in the name of a cause. After Jordan kills the fascist who wanders near his sleeping bag, he is bothered by a constant feeling of guilt. It seems that Jordan experiences a change as the novel progresses, but his determination to complete the very dangerous mission never wavers, even though it becomes very clear that they will probably not escape. His code hero ethic to do what he needs to do manages to defeat his feelings for Maria, his growing negative feeling about the cause, and war itself. If Jordan had simply abandoned the mission, he would have been able to live happily ever after with Maria, but he would have let general Golz down by not doing what he was sent to do. At the end of the novel, Jordan ends being injured in the process of trying to escape. He convinces Maria to leave him and escape with the rest of the band. Agustin even offers to put him out of his misery, so he doesnt have to face the approaching fascists. Jordan, however, does not want to go out without a fight. By facing death bravely, he also aids those whose lives he has endangered. The code heros ability to show grace under pressure also becomes a factor in Robert Jordans definition. At the very end of the novel, Jordan finds himself with a broken leg. The fascists are catching up, and the band is trying to carry him to safety, even though with him, the chances of escaping become very slim. Here, Jordan goes above and beyond the call of duty by staying behind to hold off the fascists. Sacrificing himself not for the cause, but for the small group, is what gives us Hemingways definition of a code hero. The poem Child by Plat deals with the theme of motherhood. A theme which has a universal appeal as parents may have a mutual feeling for their child as the feelings Plat has for hers. I also was able to relate the love that Plat has for her child to the love my parents would have for me and now have a renewed respect for them. The mom has a very optimistic tone as Plat expresses her hopes, desires and wishes for her child. The poem is very uplifting because of this, I even found myself smiling while reading the poem. The poem was most poignant when Plat says your eye is the one absolutely beautiful thing, this sweet line implies that everything else in the poets life is somehow tainted or imperfect. The opening of this poem is therefore a blend of Joy at her childs beauty and despair that nothing else in the poets life is similarly lovely. The poem Poppies in July is Just immersed in Plashs pain or even the lack of it. The state she describes is profoundly terrifying. He informs Othello that his father in law is on the way. However, before Senator Brabantio had arrived, Othello is summoned by the senate to plan on how to counter an alleged attack from their neighbors, the Turks. As he discusses the handkerchief issue with Cas sio, Bianca arrives and accuses Cassio for allegedly cheating on her with Desdemona. Othello realizes this development and gives his wife’s infidelity allegations a second thought. However, Iago successfully manages to convince him that Desdemona is cheating on him with Cassio. Othello vows to kill Desdemona. He also asks Iago to get rid off Cassio. Out of anger, Othello mistreats his Wife and even hits her before her family. Roderigo gives up on his pursuit of Desdemona but Iago encourages him to continue with his aim. At the same time, Cassio is appointed the governor of Cyprus. Globalization has led the belief that relegation of women is an outdated practice. It is important to note that, outdated cultural practices form the basis for lack of economic growth. Statistics indicate that only 60% of female graduates from South Korea between the ages of 24-65 years have employment. Therefore, the labor market in South Korea has a surplus. Firms hire men even though some women might have better qualifications than the men they hire.

Another belief that I came to view as superstitious is the belief that education was designed solely for equipping an individual with intelligence. Unfortunately, this is the same thought that most people have and the truth of the matter is that this is a misguided point of view. One of the major objectives of education is to help a learner or a child realize the inborn capabilities and talents and the potential that they possess (Gardner 34). If articulated in the right manner, education will help the learner to be able to develop and nurture problem solving skills on a personal level. These are the two major realizations that have helped me grow as a person and as a future professional educator; the second being the most impactful. As discussed, the first realization that has had an impact on my way of thinking is the fact that learning is an interactive process in totality. As a classroom based educator, my number one objective should be to create a conducive classroom climate. A conducive classroom climate is one that encourages the participation of all the students in class. For example, group discussions is one of the ways that can promote a conducive classroom climate. ... If a child shows signs of linguistic intelligence, it is up to me as an elementary teacher to teach them how to nurture this talent and help them in development of their career. It is essential to help children grow in their linguistic intelligence because language is the most common and most accepted form of communication in the world. Another form of intelligence is logical thinking. It can also be referred to as mathematical thinking. Some children have the capabilities to understand the underlying principle of a casual system and can be able to manipulate numbers (Adsit, 67). When I become a professional educator, I will be teaching such kind of children how to use their capabilities to come up with inventions among other
